A program on how to make an asphalt school ground come alive with urban agriculture and "value-added" products.
In this program, we work with Unity High students and staff to sustain Unity's 18-garden-bed food system. Our approach is to simply remind Unity's youth that they already know how to grow food. We are simply here to guide them along the process. They are the educators!
First- and second-year students use human-powered tools, such as handsaws, while third- and fourth-year students are trained on how to use electric power tools to build and maintain Unity's garden. Students participate in weekly education seminars, which include videos, internet research, and guest speakers that focus on the links between environmental damage and human dependence on petroleum-based products. Overall, students learn the value of independence, human power, and sustainability.
After our first planting year of 2005-2006, we harvested 75 pounds of produce! In 2009, we harvested over 150 pounds of produce. Student participants are encouraged to take food home to their families. Often, you will find student participants munching on a new favorite vegetable or herb they grew, such as lemon cucumbers. "They're just so good, man!" says Candido Santay, a student participant.
Unity high youth also learn community service through gardening. We will, on average, create three backyard gardens per year for community members in need. Lifetime technical assistance is offered to garden recipients through OFC Membership, which includes seeds from our seed bank, soil amendments, garden maintenance services, compost delivery, and more!
Program Hours: Wednesdays 12-2pm and Fridays 3-5pm
